On 19 August, The BCCI (The Board Of Control for cricket in India) had officially announced the 2020 IPL title sponsorship to be held in UAE. The popular fantasy cricket app DREAM11 win the title with the bid amount of 222 crore. BCCI had sent the invitations on 10 August to many companies who are interested in the 2020 IPL title sponsorship. Basically the BCCI sends an EOI to the third parties. EOI means "Express Their Interest".In this bidding competition, we saw many big companies participation like Unacademy, BYJUS, TATA Group, Patanjali and also the DREAM11 and many more.At the end DREAM11 win his bid and get selected for the IPL sponsorship.
A Few months ago, a clash between Indian and Chinese troops had been happening to the Ladakh. Then everyone started to boycott the Chinese products and stuff. That's why the Chinese smartphone manufacturer VIVO set back from the IPL because the criticism faced by the company. In 2018 VIVO had already signed 5 years IPL title sponsorship for Rs 2199 crore, but in this situation VIVO's contract was suspended. So if we see the calculation , we can understand perfectly that the DREAM11 is paying half of the money in VIVO's annual budget(439.80 crore) for the IPL.
After that, many people asked about that Chinese investment in the DREAM11 app.The BCCI had already said that it was a minor amount. The DREAM11 officials said that around 20-25% stakes are held by the third parties, which one of them is Tencent Holdings Ltd(Chinese company). There are more than a dozen apps(Paytm, Swiggy,Big Basket, Zomato, Byju's and many more ) in India which are invested by the Chinese companies.
DREAM11 had sent a proposal for the three year contract for the IPL sponsorship but BCCI rejected it.The BCCI said that we have still a contract of VIVO.If VIVO wouldn't come in the next two years then BCCI will start their fresh bids in the year of 2021, 2022 and also said by the BCCI officials that "If we are getting Rs 440 crore , why will we settle for Rs 240 crore? ".So, BCCI happy that get at least 200 plus crore in this year.
Brijesh Patel, IPL chairman said that,
"We welcome Dream11 on board as Title Sponsor for the 2020 edition of the IPL. Dream11 upgrading their association from an Official Partner to Title Sponsors is a great testament to the brand IPL. Dream11 as a fantasy sports brand will only grow the engagement of the IPL with its fans. As a digital brand it will give them leverage to create exciting online engagement for fans sitting at home and watching the matches. We look forward to delivering great value to Dream11."
The CEO & Co-founder of DREAM11 said that,"The launch of IPL in 2008 gave birth to the idea of Dream11. As avid sports fans, we wanted to offer fantasy cricket to IPL fans to help them further engage with the sport they love and showcase their sports knowledge & skill. Being a proud homegrown Indian brand that is made in India, by Indians and exclusively for Indian sports fans, we would like to thank the BCCI for giving us an opportunity to become the Title Sponsor of IPL, which in our opinion is the world’s greatest sports property. We believe that ‘Dream11 IPL’ also perfectly defines what IPL is all about: every team fielding its Dream11 team culminating in the IPL finals determining The Dream11. We are happy to continue building our partnership with BCCI & IPL to further promote sports fan engagement in India, and look forward to 10 Crore+ Indians making their Dream11 for every Dream11 IPL match."
