Horrible Plane Crash in Kerala, at Calicut International Airport

 Air India is an Indian airline,the parent company is Air India Limited, a full ownership of Government Enterprise.They have a fleet of Airbus and Boeing type of aircraft and they serve a large scale of domestic and international flights in India.They have held the largest market share of 18.6% in the aviation sector of India.


In the initial days of 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic, almost most of the countries declared lockdown and India also.Many foreign people as well as Indians all over the world are enclosed by the foreign countries because of this lockdown.The international and domestic flights also are banned by the government due to this lockdown.Many countries started their international flights for the evacuating the citizens by their own countries.That's why, India launches a evacuating mission that called Vande Bharat Mission,this mission implemented by the Central and state government.The mission started on 7 May.Air India and the subsidiary airliner Air India Express were taking part in this evacuating mission.


On 7th August ,Friday evening an Air India Express Boeing plane was coming to India at Calicut International airport departed from Dubai International Airport,with on-board 190 people. Due to this monsoon on Fridays evening heavy rains, wet the track in Kerala and the track was slippery.The pilot and co-pilot were going for the runway 28, but the weather condition reduced the visibility of the runway.That,is why the pilot requested for the runway 10 but before that the aircraft almost down about the beyond the runway.Because of the slippery track, the aircraft couldn't to stop before the end of the tabletop runway and dive into the cliff.


Tabletop runway mainly located on the top of a plateau or a hill with both ends is contiguous to edge of a mountain which drops into a deep cliff.There are 4 tabletop runway in India -

  • Calicut International Airport (Kerala)
  • Kannur International Airport(Kerala) 
  • Mangalore International Airport (Karnataka)
  • Lengpui Airport (Mizoram)
In 2010 , the Air Express Flight 812 crashed in the Mangalore International Airport.

In this incident, a CISF personal sees everything from his eyes , and immediately contact the air traffic control room.The airport rescue team started the operation along with the CISF jawans and also called the airport departmental health care.The ambulance reaches the crash site and taken the victims for admitting into the various hospitals of Kozhikeode and Malappuram districts.The Emergency response team,Special Assistance Team Of Air India also known as 'Angels of Air India' were also deployed for the rescue.

DGCA,Directorate General Of Civil Aviation,India is a aviation regulatory board of India.The board also surveys, most of the airport in India,year to year.The board also investigates the accidents and incidents.In the last year,the aviation board had issued a notice for the airport director of the Calicut International Airport.In the last year inspection report said by the DGCA senior officials that we can clearly see the cracks on the runway,water stagnation which means water stops the flowing and it can damage the foundations of a runway,and also the excessive rubber deposits.In this notice we had seen the cracks in 28 TDZ and 10 TDZ(Touch Down zone , where the aircrafts are landing in his first contact).The airport Apron surface,where the aircrafts are parked, is also damaged and the DGCA also showcases the many more safety lapses.


The AAIB(Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau),DGCA and also the flight safety department investigating this matter.They found the black-box in the crash site and recovered it.They send it in Delhi for analysis.Black-box is a digital flight data recorder and a cockpit voice recorder.This device helps us to know the speed,voice between the pilot and co-pilot,position,altitude of the aircraft.

After that, Minister Of Civil Aviation Hardeep Singh Puri visited the crash site and tells his deepest condolences to this incident.Pinarayi Vijayan, who was the chief minister of Kerala has visited the Kozhikeode Medical College and other hospital to see the victims.

The investigating of the accident is ongoing.
